ABOUT THIS ISSUE This issue of The Call Number focuses on special libraries, which my favorite background source, Wikipedia (yes, I admit it), describes as “a library that is neither an academic or school library, or a public library. Special libraries include law libraries, corporate libraries, museum libraries, and medical libraries.” And libraries of botanic gardens, newspapers, prisons, foundations, government agencies, and so on. The diversity of special library settings profiled in this issue alone is remarkable, ranging from an archival sheet music collection to the high-tech world of an online network. SLIS students with an affinity for special libraries, or just curiosity about working in a different kind of library, can join tours sponsored by LISSTEN and participate in a local chapter of the Special Libraries Association (SLA). Last year I served as the Student Liaison to the San Andreas (San Jose area) chapter, contributing news about SLIS to the CHAPTER BLOG; Jane Rice will be the liaison for 2008. Students can also become members of the NATIONAL SLA, and attend the annual conference in June, at discounted rates. The four SLIS students pictured at the 2007 Denver conference found each other among the thousands of attendees and enjoyed comparing notes over tapas and wine at the end of the day—ahh, the life of a special librarian !
