About:

The Mechanics' Institute is a nonprofit membership organization open to the public. Founded in 1854, the Institute's goals were to provide technical education and training for mechanics in the city of San Francisco. Located in a historical landmark building in downtown San Francisco, the Mechanics' Institute offers members a full service, general interest library, a historic chessroom, classes, lectures, and literary and performing arts events. Today, the Mechanics' Institute Library today houses  an excellent current and retrospective collection consisting of books, periodicals, and audiovisual materials on a variety of subjects. Special collections focus on California history, business, finance, investment, fiction and literature, travel, and chess. Please join us on a tour of this unique and historic library!
