When: Tuesday, October 23, at 6 PM
The library is unique in its custom system of shelving designed to facilitate and emphasize browsing: for instance, "Suburbia" is next to the section on "Domestic Environments" then "Architecture" which becomes "Graphic Design" which in turn leads to "Typography" and "Fine Arts" and then "Advertising" and "Sales". There is no Dewey Decimal system or card catalog. There will be a talk on the this innovative library project lasting from
30-60 minutes. After the talk, attendees can explore the collections of the Prelinger Library. Be sure to bring your digital camera!

The tour will last about an hour. There will be an optional dinner afterwards. The tour is open to SJSU SLIS alumni and students and there are no charge for entrence.
The Mechanics' Institute is a nonprofit membership organization open to the public. Founded in 1854, the Institute's goals were to provide technical education and training for mechanics in the city of San Francisco.

Please, be aware that the Margaret Herrick Library is separate and different from the Film Academy Archive; however, both are renowned for their unique collections. The Margaret Herrick Library boasts a wonderful and rare collection of books, manuscripts, screenplays, clipping files, and photographs; as well as costume sketches, sound recordings, and oral histories.
