The Prelinger Library is an appropriation-friendly (scanners, digital cameras, and CD/DVD burners are available so visitors can make digital copies of items of interest and take them home), browsable collection of approximately 40,000 books, periodicals, printed ephemera and government documents located in San Francisco, California. Rick and Megan Shaw Prelinger built and opened the privately funded public library in 2004, inspired in part by the Warberg Institute Library in London. The library is unique in its custom system of shelving designed to facilitate and emphasize browsing: for instance, "Suburbia" is next to the section on "Domestic Environments" then "Architecture" which becomes "Graphic Design" which in turn leads to "Typography" and "Fine Arts" and then "Advertising" and "Sales". There is no Dewey Decimal system or card catalog.

There will be a talk on the this innovative library project lasting from 30-60 minutes, depending on how interactive the discussion is. After the talk, attendees can explore the collections of the Prelinger Library. Be sure to bring your digital camera!

Cost:

Free. There will be no attendance fee but monetary donations to the Prelinger Library will be accepted (although not required) in appreciation of the efforts of the Prelinger staff in hosting this event.
