Core Competency K

The following statement and submitted evidence show my competency in designing training programs based on appropriate learning principles and theories.

Statement of Competency K

As Drucker (1994) points out, changes that are occurring in technology this time create fundamental changes in society as well. The speed with which information is delivered and the ease of access to information and knowledge fundamentally changes the dimensions of our world. In this new society, learning becomes a process that never ends, and our most important asset is the skill of learning... MORE>>

Evidence 1 :: Instructional Guide for the Colorado's Historic Newspaper Collection [PDF]

This instructional guide was written as an assignment for the Reference and Information Services class, Fall of 2006, and shows my competency in designing training material based on appropriate learning principles and theories.

An instructional guide was designed to help older public library patrons to use the Colorado’s Historic Newspaper Collection. Reflecting the particular need of its intended audience, information is presented clearly and in familiar format of the newsletter. The guide provides information about the scope of the collection and describes in details various searching options. The newspapers in the database are not indexed but key-word searchable, and that can create a number of problems, in particular in the case of the historical newspapers. Users are given a number of technical tips about the searching techniques and given some examples of change in common word use. The guide also gives the instructions about options users have to view, save and print their search results. The guide also provides the contact information of institutions and individuals that could be contacted for further information about the content and use of the database.

Evidence 2 :: Proposal for Bookmaking Workshops [PDF]

This proposal was developed for UCR Extension program in 2004, but never realized. However, it shows my competency in designing training programs based on appropriate learning principles and theories.

The purpose of the workshop is to teach students simple bookmaking techniques and in the same time make them aware of bookmaking traditions across various cultures. The workshop is designed as two day weekend workshop. The first day students would be introduced to different papers and the gluing techniques and than apply those skills to make simple scroll book. In the afternoon students would learn about the Buddhist tradition of palm leaf books and the modern ways to make this book format. The next day students will explore Chinese book tradition and make an accordion book. The final project of the workshop would be a European style booklet. The proposal also suggests that this two day workshop can be modified in series of one-day workshops with focus on the every-day as well as artistic application of various book formats. The proposal gives an illustration of each book format, gives scope and learning outcomes of each individual section of workshop, and a list of materials necessary for completion of the projects.
