Library and Information Science Students to Encourage Networking

All students are welcome to serve on the following committees since all students are automatically LISSTEN members upon enrollment into the SJSU-SLIS program. If you are interested or have any questions, please contact :: LISSTEN Board :: for more information. Remember, this is a great way to gain professional LIS connections and experience!

Library Tours

Throughout the year, LISSTEN hosts library tours, for all types of libraries, up North and in Southern California. While students benefit from gaining practical exposure to different library settings, committee members organizing such tours gain valuable professional contacts. Those interested in organizing a library tour should contact the LISSTEN President, with their suggestions and questions. More >>

Banned Books Week Committee

HEATHER FUCINARI , Chair
Every year, LISSTEN celebrates Banned Books Week late September/early October by hosting a read-a-thon and day-long festival celebrating the freedom to read while also promoting our right to unfettered access to information. In past years, LISSTEN has invited local librarians, LIS students, teachers, artists, and community members at large to participate. This is a great way for committee members and participants to experience the rewards of community outreach while championing our First Amendment rights and intellectual freedom as information professionals.More>>

Fundraising Committee

BRENDA RAMIREZ, Chair
The LISSTEN Fundraising Committee leads the organization’s participation in resource development.  The primary source of dollars raised comes from merchandise sales, donations and other fundraising events as laid out by the Committee or the Treasurer. Funds raised are used to facilitate professional library and information science networking events, such as LISSTEN’s Annual Resume and Interview Workshop, Professional Associations Day, Banned Books Week Read-A-Thon, and library tours.  Funds also help to pay for some of LISSTEN’s nominal operational costs. The largest portion of LISSTEN’s funds is spent on the production of the SJSU-SLIS annual graduation ceremony for SLIS students in Southern California. More>>

Professional Association Day Committee

TBA, Chair
During the fall, LISSTEN invites a myriad of LIS professional organizations to provide information and speak to SJSU-SLIS students. In return, students come away from the event with a broader knowledge base of the many different professional organizations available for their own professional development. Additionally, committee members enjoy the opportunity of working with LIS professionals in planning this event as well as gain experience in fundraising.

Resume/Interview Workshop Committee

TBA, Chair
As one of LISSTEN’s most popular and widely received events, the R/I Workshop is an opportunity for SJSU-SLIS students to gain resume building tips and also hone their interviewing skills by participating in mock interviews with LIS professionals from public, school, academic, and special libraries. Committee members gain invaluable networking opportunities with the professional contacts they gain in organizing this event. This is also a fundraising opportunity for LISSTEN.

Graduation Committee

TBA, Chair
As this important day is the light at the end of the tunnel for all of us in the program, LISSTEN makes this day a special one for SJSU-SLIS graduates in Southern California by providing music, photography, and a memorable setting at Hope University’s Auditorium. Graduation committee members gain valuable event planning and programming experience. Even more, committee members seek great inspiration by watching their fellow SLIS classmates successfully meet their academic goals. More>>
